Whilst riding a bike down the promenade at Playa Honda, Lanzarote, a blue uniformed policeman stepped out and flagged me to stop. I had been on the island just a few hours and I’d broken the law!
There had been recent changes in the local laws and cycling on this section of the promenade was now forbidden. I was unaware of that and in broken English the stern looking local policeman pointed at the road, then the promenade and using his arms to communicate, he enforced the law.
I smiled at him and apologised. Then I sheepishly pushed my bike back down towards our nearby villa. But in those few seconds of encountering the lawman I spotted his holster and pistol with an array of other police requirements, including a spray of some sort, not for his hair, handcuffs and communication sets.
The gun caught my attention though. He wore it like the character Deputy Marshal Rayland Giddings from the Netflix hit series, ‘Justified’. Anyone that’s watched that series will know that Rayland’s gun spends more time out of the holster than in it!

Actually, if I’m being accurate, I believe the correct term for an hand arm is a pistol, but hey, that’s neither here nor there. This Canarian policeman’s gun/pistol/shooter/firearm hung slightly out from his bodyline and his arm hung further out to compensate for it. He was ready for a fast draw! All I had was my wit and that would have been useless on this occasion.
